I have been searching for FREE plans on the internet on building a pool table and have finally found them. What an excellent project you have created. I have enjoyed woodworking since I was really young and I am only 21 right now. I had always wanted a fussball table and built myself one about 4 years ago. Since then, I have built 2 more and now I am ready to take on the challenge of a pool table. Thanks a million for this website.

I just got into wood working when my grandpa gave me an old roll top desk and I set out to refinish it b/c it was in bad shape. While I was doing that I got to thinking about how much I always wanted a pool table and decided to build one on my own. I happened to come across your website and I was impressed. It is good to see that there are people still on the web that are not in it for profit b/c your site will be an excellent resource for my venture. I plan to make some of my own modifications to suit my tastes and needs but over all this site has been an excellent help.

Your plan look good except I am confused. Your plans for the rails dont' see to add up. The measurements don't seem to be correct.

Authors Comment: You are correct... Now they are right. The 4 1/4 that was on the drawing was for the overall rail width. The new measurement of 3 inches for the mahogany is correct.

A couple of years ago, I purchased a 4-1/2'x 9' carom table and have been looking for dimensions to use to cut the rails. Your project came along a little late, but I plan to use the information. Why is your mahogany width 4-1/4"? Does it look odd with the pockets inset? Also I have a cheap 4'x 8' table (no slate) that I would give to anyone who wants to pick it up. Thanks, nice job on the table.

Authors Comment: It is amazing that the drawing has been the same for over 8 months and no one ever noticed it. Now I have had 4 emails and 2 posts in the Guestbook in the past week. It is now correct, the 4 1/4 inches was for the overall rail width (including subrail).

An excellent site. I am finally getting around to planning my table, based upon a water dammmaged free-be I got almost ten years ago. Most parts were damaged beyond repair due to the particle board composition but the 1 1/2 inch slate is in good shape. There were two tables available and I got the second one. The first guy unfortunately took 3 end rails and 3 side rails so I got 5 side rails and one end rail.

Love the idea. Am going to purchase a high end saw, shaper, CNC Machine and wide belt sander as soon as I get finished suing the Government for putting me in jail for a crime I did not commit. I was planning to purchase a table when the time came but now I see that I can probably build a much better table than I could purchase. What a pleasure it will be to shoot some 8 ball with friends and family on a table I have made myself. Thanks for the inspiration Best Regards Stehen Leadbeater

Great detail and excellent pictures. Did you consider using 2" paper honeycomb in a stressed box configuration rather than slate? Lots lighter, flat as a pancake and probably less expensive too.

Hey John!!--Thanks for the great information! I purchased an old Brunswick table about four years ago and dismantled it intending to "build a high-end pool table" out of the usable coponents. I have had all of the "pieces" stored since that time and just recently started gathering information from the internet to begin the rebuild. Your website is fantastic and will be a great help to my effort!! Thanks for sharing and I will plan to make a contribution to help defray the cost of website maintenance. I will keep you posted with my progress and may contact you again for more information. Thanks again for sharing your project!! It really looks fantastic!! Best Regards, Glen Fox Glen A. You have a fantastic, fascinating Web site. I plan to build my own table, but I have this stupid question: Do you have to use slate? Could you, for example, laminate together two or three sheets of 3/4” plywood instead? This would be lighter, cheaper and faster than slate, since you’d need only visit your local lumber yard. The only problem would be the joints and thermal expansion/contraction. You could leave tiny spaces between the boards for this, or just let the boards “float” under the rails a bit, allowing them to expand outward in hot weather (they’d just move a bit under the rail). Has anyone tried wood? e-mail me to ricmor@istar.ca.

Hello guys, the other day I was thinking about building a speed boat out of carbon fibre. I had some trouble moulding the door sills, but it's looking great. I'm thinking of powering it with two Evinrude 200 hp outboard motors. It is looking beauriful, but I was wondering if you think the Chevy Suburban is a better buy than the Ford Expedition. I mean, I need to tow the boat and I think the Ford has a better towing capacity. Any ideas anyone? Cheers, Thomas

What a beautiful table. Thanks a million for posting that on a website so everyone can enjoy its splendor and also learn from your experiences how to build a table (which I hope to do someday) or how to re-felt a table (which me and a buddy are going to try to do in a couple of weeks). Again, John, I can't say it enough----BEAUTIFUL! I also like the cost on it. I was on the internet looking at prices and in stores (Columbus, OH) and they want $3000-$4000 dollars for tables that are similar! We are going to build our "dream house" in about 4 or 5 years and hopefully I can build that table (it will probably cost me a little more because I'm not a carpenter or anything close to one so I am sure I'll screw up a couple times!!).

Love your site. Bookmarked for later use. I do have a question though. If someone were looking to build a table on a smaller budget, say $750-$1250, would there be any alternatives to the supplies you were using? Such as an alternative for slate (which usually turns out to be VERY expensive). Any help you can provide would be great. Thanks again.

Great site. I just finished building my own snooker table and it was quite a project and it plays like a dream. I had a blast building it. I had one advantage though in that I own a large cabinet shop and had all the equipment at my disposal. Just finished my table. Your step-by-step instructions were very helpful. I bought some "used" slate from a dealer for $300 and they GAVE me some used pockets that just needed some cleaning up. That saved me $240. My entire budget was under $1200 for the table. Buying the subrail was a great idea and was well worth the money. If anyone has any questions or would like to see pictures, feel free to contact me.

Fabulous job. I acquired a Schaaf table free!! It was in a garage for 4 years in Minnesota. All the hardware, slate, balls, cues, etc. came with it.Problem was- it was totally taken apart and no instructions came with. It now proudly sits in my basement rec/pool room and is totally awesome. Your table however is a true work of art. Kudos to you!!! A benefit to where my table sits, is that it becomes a great place to crawl under during tornado warnings...... JZ.

I think that your project was very interesting. You should have included a picture of yourself. That way we get an idea what you look like. The table looks like it came out great. The only question that i really have is how tall should a tabl be from the floor to the slate? Also, can you find ball racks to go at the end of the table? If so, where can you find them? I also wanted to know how old you were. I suspect that you are in your late 20's or early thirties. Anyway, congradulations on your hard work and dedication.

I was in search of table legs when I found your web site on MSN. I moved in to my home a year ago that had a pool table with a very worn felt, come to find out when I was taking the old felt off, the table is a home or custom build table in bad shape. The miters off, the boards for the leg support are too short and not touching the sides. I really dont know how this table is standing. So I have decided to rebuild it, thanks to your your web site I can find the parts I need to make this table top notch. Thanks you have made my life much easier. Phil

But, seeing your site with the steps laid out and the photos makes me realize that I can do it if I take 1 step at a time. Thanks for the great information and the great motivation. I recently bought a pool table at an auction that was a complete table. Or so they said. By the time three tables parts were taken home by three different owners I'm not sure anyone has all of one! Your information is guiding me along as I try to put the thing together and try and figure out what I don't have. Thanks for sharing!!

Hi John Again! Thank goodness you are better at your craft than I am at writing a note and reading for errors before submitting! Obviously, I did NOT do that in our excitement to get back to reading more of the comments and seeing the pool table in detail again - but our praises of your talents were NOT in error, just the apostrophes hanging out here and there, etc.!! I play in the chimes choir at church Janet directs and Walt plays in and the both of them will get a kick out of this - as it is just "me" - we have a lot of laughs and fellowship in that group! The both of them are wonderful folks CJ and I feel blessed to know. Thanks again for sharing this entire project with us and others. Sincerely, Linda Salerno

My wife finally decided to allow me to purchase a pool table. I have been working this for several years. For Xmas she gave me a set of balls and a blank check to find my table. Only problem was she thought I could find a nice table for around $500. I did look at several used tables, but quickly determined I would not find what I was looking for under $1k. I decided to buy a old table that needed repair. The only ting I will use on this table is the sub structure and the slate. I have decided to replace all the wood. Finding your site was a GOD SEND!!! I had no idea how to do the fine details, but now I feel comfortable with the information you provided. Thanks for the level of detail, I will send pics along the way.

Outstanding, superb work! I am amazed!!! I never knew you could do such accurate work! I guess your racquetball game work strategy fooled me! Wink! You are doing a fine job, also creating a beautiful conversation piece to sit back and admire,as you play nine ball. This is an accomplishment considering all the time and effort spent! You should be proud of your efforts and never mind the smashed, mashed fingers, it comes with the territory! Heck I could of saved ya the money for bandaids and Neosporin! I would of went "undercover" for ya and snuck out a few flintstone bandaids out of my wifes firstaid box! She would of not missed a thing, unless you had to use a turniqit and splints. Yikes! Where ya gonna put the pool table in the house? If ya need some help on remodeling the kitchen give me a call. I can see it now, playing pool, frying shrimp on the kitchen barbee stove, grabbing a frosty out of the frig, AAH yes, maybe put a 1950's music juke box in the corner. Do ya think maybe ya better ask your wife first though, she dont look like the type that likes surprizes, mine dont. Well enough funnin, keep up the good work and give me a call for the Grand Opening and let the games begin! C-YA partner! Happy trails!

Like many others, I have seen the posts on the "wreck" but have not stopped by the site before. An impressive project, as well as the time to document all the steps on the web site. I have pondered a pool table project myself, and have to say "Thanks for convincing me never to try this". I am now over 2+ years into my previous 6 month project with many aspects still not finished, and so find myself with too many distractions and new "interim" projects happening all around me. I can still admire a person who can tackle such a heavy, as in physically heavy, project. I see you have managed to avoid justifying new toys, sorry tools. When I did my first extension I bought my first compound slider. I have now retired that one and got a 10in unit. I am pleased to read you are doing this from "mental plans", a man after my own heart. I normally put down a few sketches and rough dimensions and then find the design matures as work proceeds. It does extend the time to completion, but I enjoy the ability to add new details or changes as they occur. Good work. Dave Paine.

Great looking table!!. Now, if you had the task to make this into a conference table from time to time....how would you do it?

Editors Comments: Very easy to make sections that lay on top of the table. You do not even have to make them solid if you want to cut down on the weight factor of removing them...

Looks like you've been well informed on the construction of the table; Where did you find your info on making a table? Keep up the great work and thanks for keeping us informed!

Just figured I would let you guys/gals know that I installed the slate upside down on the frame yesterday... Smashed the crap out of my finger doing it to. But then again if you don't bleed on it it isn't yours. One section of slate has the liners glued on it and the other two sections will be done by wednesday. I will be posting pictures of those probably this weekend.

Just wanted to let you know that the web site will be changing soon. I will be removing the dates and replacing them with sections. There will also be a main page with sub pages connected. That way people do not have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see the new updates. I also will be adding in the new drawings w/ dimensions sometime this week. One other thing I will be adding the frame cross members sometime this week along with the poplar support on the top of the frame. So STAY TUNED!!!
